Welcome to Duluth, Minnesota.
Duluth is a town in and the county seat of St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 86,918. It is a seaport at the westernmost point on Lake Superior, perhaps farther from the ocean than any other seaport. It is linked to the Atlantic Ocean via the Great Lakes and then either the Erie Canal/New York State Barge Canal or the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Duluth is an international seaport, nestled against a 600-ft bluff overlooking the breathtaking scenery of Lake Superior and the harbor. Located on the southwestern tip of the largest body of freshwater in the world, Duluth is half-way between Minneapolis-St. Paul and the Canadian border. Although narrow, Duluth extends some 25 miles along the lakeshore.
Duluth is one of the largest cities in the northern section of Minnesota, with over 87,000 people right in the city and additional 185,000 in a 30-mile radius. Known as a winter playground, don't be deceived into thinking the only time to visit this great city is in the winter, there are activities here all year round.
Duluth also has a strong international flavor as annually more than one thousand ships from many foreign countries sail beneath the historic Aerial Lift Bridge into the seaport. But Duluth still retains a hometown touch, with residents enjoying and preserving a wealth of natural resources including numerous trails, rivers, lakes and more than one hundred city parks - all within the city limits.
Industries include tourism, healthcare, financial/banking, mining, paper, communications, education and shipping. Interlake cargoes of iron, grain, coal and stone combine to make this the top volume port on the Great Lakes. But health care is a huge employer in the region and one out of every seven people are involved in health care in some way.
Looking for a college or university? Then look no further than Duluth, which is home to the College of St. Scholastica, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Lake Superior Community College, Fond du Lac Community College and across the bay, the University of Wisconsin-Superior. There are plenty of family friendly activities and one big annual one is the "Zoo Year's Eve" at the Lake Superior Zoo. Families enjoy sliding, skating, crafts and much more! A fabulous fireworks display tops off the evening, lighting up the skies over Lake Superior.
And let's not forget Lake Superior! It is the largest freshwater lake in the world, stretching 350 miles east to west, and 160 miles north to south. More like a sea than a lake, it had tides, and waves. During storms the waves have been known to tower over 20 feet tall, large enough and strong enough to sink a tanker.
Duluth residents love their lake and many of their activities center around the lake, including the annual, "Warmer by the Lake". People come to enjoy a fun-filled day of winter activities such as an ice skating pond, sliding hill, marshmallow roasting, festival music and hayrides and a bonfire.
Allowances are made for the cold and the snow, and there is an extensive, climate-controlled skywalk connects downtown facilities, including the 50 restaurants, 23 city parks, sculpture gardens and rose gardens.
For year round activities, Duluth has you covered! From two 27-hole golf courses to 41 tennis courts, from 29 baseball/softball fields to 22 neighborhood recreation centers, there is always something to do. Snowmobiles are the vehicles of choice in the winter months, and to accommodate that, there are 45 miles of trails, as well as 44 miles of cross-country ski trails.
The beauty of the region is unparalleled, and Duluth has enhanced this with secluded waterfalls throughout town. There are also many rock-climbing opportunities throughout the city, and if you'd rather take a drive, you'll find perfection waiting around every corner as this region is home to the North Shore Scenic Drive, designated a National All American Road. This 30-mile scenic drive follows the ancient shoreline 600 feet above the city.
